The Scratch Orchestra
Although much of The Great Learning was conceived before the group’s inception, no introduction to this piece would be complete without mention of the Scratch Orchestra. The Scratch Orchestra was an experimental music ensemble that performed music with an emphasis on non-standard forms of notation, free improvisation (especially with unusual instruments, or sound-making devices) and the performance of existing compositions (both by scratch members and non-members). Many members had no formal musical education, which resulted in a diverse musical and social mix that flew in the face of the modernist musical elite of the time. This was perfect for the music of The Great Learning. In this way the Scratch Orchestra ended up shaping the piece and vice versa.
