Exit Strategies

Exit Strategies is a series of three performances written in 2007-2008.

Exit Strategies I

This is the first piece in the Exit Strategies trilogy. It is a loosely notated piece of music with a game-driven structure. The performers undertake actions which they invent, using instruments dictated by the score. The result is an improvised piece of indeterminate length. The first performance took place at Ada Street Gallery, just off Broadway Market, Hackney (London, England) in April 2007, and lasted about 2 hours. Quite prominent in this performance were the sounds of metal instruments, including thumb piano, tam-tam and waterphone.

Exit Strategies II

This is the second piece of the Exit Strategies trilogy. It was written for a performance at Performer Stammtisch, Berlin May 5th 2008.

The first part of the piece stems from a game-like improvisatory structure – performers in london (at auto-italia south east ) were given some short instructions and a sound making device (ie. make a sound, take two steps forward, make a sound, turn right, take two steps forward, make a sound, repeat). On the floor was marked the exact size of the venue in Berlin, and no sound was to be made outside of this area.

This performance was recorded, and played back at the Performance in Berlin, followed by a computer simulation of the same instructions.

Exit Strategies III

The Third part of the Exit Strategies trilogy, this took place as a part of the Leytonstone Arts Trail 2008 at Hollow Ponds. Performers were given perry whistles, and asked to walk outwards from a central point, keeping in time with a pulse set by a metronome. As they get further away, their syncronisation diverges, resulting in a barrage of distinct whistles from all directions.
